THE KASTEL FORTRESS

The old fortress Kastel is located in the heart of Banja Luka. It is one of the oldest buildings in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The surface of the Kastel complex is 48,000 square meters. The fortress walls consist of nine bastions and two towers. There are several facilities in the fortress, including a central camp with two towers.

The first traces of development of a settlement at a place of today’s Kastel date from the Paleolithic period. The Jupiter altar was found in 1895 in today’s Kastel. The fortress Banja Luka was constructed at a place of some older and smaller fortification after 1463, as part of the border on the Vrbas River in a system of defense of Hungary from Turkey. Annexes were constructed on the fortress Kastel in 1587. The fortress was turned into a town during the rule of Sultan Mehmed III.

At the beginning of the 18th century, builders expanded the fortress. In 1826, one of the Banja Luka’s public bathrooms, so called Military Bathroom, was constructed in the fortress. The military barracks for artillerists on the west side, on the bank of the Vrbas River, was also constructed in that period.
